This course is an introduction to the main genres and formats of the audiovisual medium, the characteristics of each one and the way these characteristics shape contemporary storytelling. Through the study, observation and analysis of genre conventions by way of viewing relevant works and creating stories within each genre and format, we will explore the importance that this categorization plays in narrative creation and script production.
At the end of the unit, students should be able to:
- Identify the main audiovisual formats;
- Identify the main narrative genres and their subgenres;
- Understand the evolution of narrative genres over time;
- Identify the rules that define each genre; -
Use the conventions of genre as a tool in the construction of narratives.
