The Portuguese Language subject develops a theoretical and practical work, meant to improve the students' linguistic competence. They are supposed to overcome the language common usage and they are expected to attain a progressive consciousness of the language's organic working, in its multiple complexity of morphological, syntactic, semantic, rhetorical and pragmatical aspects. By the end of the attendance of this subject students should be able to have a reflexive consciousness on the language's working; master different concepts about the language's syntactical description; express grammatically correct sentences and make judgements upon the grammatical correction of sentences; make their way through the tension that is often created between grammatical correction and the urge to communicate effectively.
