To promote an understanding of the origin and evolution of the meanings of culture; to reflect on the field of cultural production, its circulation and the market of symbolic goods; to explain the emergence and growing popularity of the cultural and creative industries; to look into the centrality of cities within the context of globalization and cultural production; to characterize the field of cultural journalism and analyze examples of cultural news reporting.
Students should be able to:
- understand the evolution of the meanings of culture and its productive relationship with the media;
- decode the social contexts and the authority structures of the field of cultural production;
- understand the new policies of privatization and commodification of culture;
- know the specificities and trends of cultural journalism;
- think of new framings and develop analytical habits of mind towards the mediation of culture within the context of the information flows in contemporary societies.
